When a TikTok Becomes a Movement…
So I’m not going to lie to y’all. I was starting to feel like maybe this isn’t connecting with people.
After months of quietly working on “The Complex” Jamaica’s first multi-acre creative hub, complete with the country’s first full-scale soundstage, music studios, wellness spaces, entertainment, and more. I was starting to feel like people didn’t really see the vision. Like maybe it just sounded too big. Too ambitious. Too “out there.” Like a fool’s chase. I tried watering down the idea a couple times to make the concept more realistic to grasp I guess.
Idk. I’ve been discouraged. I’ve felt unsupported. I even started to question if I should continue. But last weekend, I posted a short TikTok to share what I’ve been building and everything changed.
In under 72 hours, the video crossed 34,400 views, 2,150+ likes, 167+ saves, and over 67 comments. And those numbers are still growing. Every time I open the app it is a dozen more likes, comments or follow from that one short post. But even more powerful than the metrics are the people.
Hundreds of strangers, many from right here in Jamaica and the Caribbean, a lot of individuals abroad alike even showed up in the comments and DMs offering support, reposting the video, and asking how they could help. Local celebrities and influencers like Jada Kingdom even reshared it. Some people offered to come to Jamaica and help teach new skills. Others shared resources or just dropped comments like “This would be great. There is so much talent there!”, “I love this! This is a big deal!” “We NEED this” ,“Great Initiative"
It’s been overwhelming. In the best way.
And I’ll admit the support has made me a bit emotional. Because for a moment, I didn’t feel so alone in this dream.
The truth is, I’ve been here before. Years ago, I co-founded a Web3 organization called Padawan DAO. With the help of social media and our network we raised almost half a million USD in less than 3 weeks to send young people all over the world to Web3 and crypto conferences covering flights, hotel, transport, and stipends just so they could learn, network, and get a shot at opportunities most of us never had.
Why? Because before that, Ric Burton (an early Ethereum developer) gave us, a small group of passionate young people, a couple thousand dollars to attend ETH Lisbon, all the way in Lisbon, Portugal. That one act of belief changed everything. And we paid it forward.
Now, I’m doing it again. But this time, with The Complex to give Caribbean creatives access to the infrastructure they’ve always deserved. To bring jobs. To keep our talent home. To prove that Jamaica can be more than a backdrop. It can be the production hub.
So if you’ve supported, liked, commented, DM’d, or even just believed thank you. You’ve reminded me that this isn’t just a project. It’s a purpose.
I’m not giving up on the dream.
AND
We’re going to make this happen. Together!
Xoxo
